Also in the second decision of today’s competition at the Tokyo International Forum, China dominated the event.

Chen Lijun, the world champion of 2013, needed only 5 attempts to take the win in the up to 67 kg weight class. His biggest competitor that day was the Colombian Luis Javier Mosquera, who still pulled away from the Chinese in the snatch. With a valid 151 kg lift, the Colombian bronze medalist of 2016 prevailed in this discipline and had the first pursuer, Pakistani Talha Talib, right on his neck.

Talib, who suffered a slight fainting spell in his first attempt at the clean and jerk, unfortunately, could not go beyond 170 kg in the clean and jerk after that. He thus quickly lost the connection in the medal fight and ended up in fifth place. One place ahead of him was the South Korean Myeongmok Han, who was still in third place after the snatch, but in the end, had to admit defeat to a strong-nerved Mirko Zanni.

Especially in the snatch the young Italian is usually a strong, but not today. Zanni started the event with 145 kg but failed twice at 150 kg. In the clean and jerk, the young man from Pordenone then put all his eggs in one basket and started with high loads. He got his first attempt with 172 kg invalid because he finished with a press-out and therefore put under pressure. Zanni had to overcome 177 kg to be able to compete for bronze. Zanni failed at 177 kg in the second attempt, but made it in the last attempt and crowned it with an emotional cheering scene.

Only Adkhamjon Ergashev from Uzbekistan was able to pose a threat to the Italian. The 22-year-old powerhouse from Uzbekistan pocketed high after an average snatch but then failed twice at 184 kg.

However, the two heaviest lifts were then also shown by the two first-place finishers. Mosquera did 180 kg, while Olympic champion Chen did 187 kg with endless momentum. The already third gold medal then even triggered slight emotions in the Chinese coaches, which was rather rare with the successes of the past years.
