A true roller coaster ride of jury decisions was experienced by the women in the up to 76 kg weight class this evening at the Tokyo International Forum. In the end, there was gold for Ecuador as well as the first medal of these games for USA Weightlifting.

Neisi Patricia Dajomes Barrera (118 kg/145 kg), is the euphonious name of the newly crowned Olympic champion up to 76 kg. With six valid attempts, the 23-year-old athlete with a penchant for colorful sportswear won the title ahead of US American Katherine Nye (111 kg/138 kg) and Mexican Aremi Fuentes Zavala (108 kg/137 kg).

Even if Dajomes Barrera and Nye were the measures of all things today, the jury had a strong influence on the competition by arbitrary decisions and reminded in one or the other situation of decisions of yesterday.

The later medal winner Nye was the first one to suffer in this competition. After successfully mastering 114 kg in the snatch the jury decided her lift to be invalid. The reason was the not-guided release of the barbell from the overhead position, which formally represents an incorrect movement, but in practice is often disregarded.

In contrast to Nye, who should certainly be able to cope with this one lost attempt, the harshness of the jury hit Korean Suhyeon Kim (106 kg/-) with full force. After only one valid snatch attempt, the first two clean and jerk were considered to be no lifts due to press-out, although the athlete successfully controlled the required load in the overhead position both times. Kim then failed in the third attempt at the jerk and expressed her displeasure with a loud scream.

This supposed toughness could be conceded to the competition jury, were it not for lapses in the other direction. Especially the later bronze medalist showed slight “press-out tendencies” in her clean and jerk attempts and also the later Olympic champion could rely on external support in her third clean and jerk attempt. The said jury even overturned the negative vote of the judges and considered one attempt to be valid that was obviously not completed.

After the Games, it will be necessary to discuss how to deal with the regulations in the future, but also the involvement of the jury. For the audience, in particular, such decisions cause discontent and negatively impact the viewing experience.

But back to the value of this category in terms of performances. Dajomes Barrera won the first medal for her home country Ecuador at the weightlifting competitions in Tokyo. Nye also took the first medal for USA Weightlifting. However, the team will also have another chance to medal later in the Games.

Although without winning medals, two Western European ladies were able to place among the top eight in this competition.

Sweden’s Patricia Strenius (102 kg/133 kg), for example, showed after a rather average snatch that she is internationally competitive in the clean and jerk and finished fourth. Seventh place went to Emily Godley (98 kg/124 kg) from Great Britain, who had already competed in the B-group and thus achieved another strong result for British Weightlifting.

Tomorrow, the last competitions of the female weight category are coming up. It’s getting serious in the up to 87 kg weight category at 8:50 a.m. German time, as well as in the over 87 kg category at 12:50 p.m. German time.
